Improviso is an interior design project located in a two-story multipurpose building in New York. It is focused on the sense of discovery of the subconscious self through the unscripted, authentic movement. The main program is an exhibition for the expressive paintings of Kikuo Saito, and space merges the authenticity of his paintings and the sense of discovery that turns itself into a performance. The uneven melted floor plate highlights the performative quality of the program.
During the process, a frozen block of milk was melted with a soldering machine, and tried to mimic the authentic movement, the dance of self that is unscripted and uncontrolled. Overall, the ground floor and the upper floor are vastly different. The first floor creates spaces with transparent and reflective surfaces, and traps the paintings in between layers. The upper floor is the opposite, with the ethereal flooring, skylights and muted color palette.
