The Shed is one of the highlights of the High Line developments. The biggest problem with the Shed is that almost nobody ever sees it moving. The mobility is so rarely utilized that the whole conceptual basis is lost in translation. In this project, the different decibel levels of the city are the thing that activates the movement of the installation. The form is amorphous and is directly influenced by the new Zaha Hadid building. Overall, the mobile and temporary installation becomes an extension of the architectural structure of the High Line.
The installation redefines the typical relationship between sound and visuals. Compelling visuals are generally paired with loud sounds, just as quiet sounds accompany quite visuals. However, this structure inverts that, and pairs the opposite ends of the spectrum by combining loud and quite. The section on the left shows the ceiling and lights “off” during the daytime. The section on the right shows the ceiling and the lights “on.”
